Steven Halpern - Self Portrait

I was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey. As in all cities in this country, I was continually exposed to the gross disparity in living conditions between the city and the suburbs. I graduated from high school in 1971, at a time of a massive movement against the war in Vietnam and a teacher's strike in Newark. In this atmosphere I began to question why the disparity between the city and the suburbs existed. This was not because someone made a mistake or was insensitive. This was because of a fundamental problem in the system we live in. This was my initial reason for becoming a socialist and I've continued to have this perspective for the past 39 years.

I worked in the automotive manufacturing industry for twenty-one years and have worked in environmental services in health care since that time.

In 2002 in self published my novel Looking Back From 2101 where I imagined a future world devoid of poverty and discrimination. Most works of fiction about the future imagine a nightmare scenario. The list of these works include, 1984, Children of Men, The Book of Eli, I am Legend, and Avatar. My novel is the only contemporary work that I know of that imagines how a profoundly better world is possible.

My blog includes book reviews, historical essays, and biographical poems about several historical leaders.
